4 Ways to Stop Your Snoring

If you, like me, sleep like a lion, you won’t know that snoring could have a big impact on your life. In addition to the health issues (important issues by the way), snoring can wreak havoc on your relationship. If you are tired of being woken up for hours by your own snoring or seeing your spouse acting cranky in the morning, maybe some of the following tips could provide some relief.

Tip 1

Review your diet. While this may not be the complete answer to treating snoring, you should start with what you eat and drink. You may be intolerant to certain foods that affect your breathing, especially when lying on your back. For example, eating too much (or being intolerant to) dairy products could produce excessive mucus, which when lying horizontally, accumulates and can result in difficulty breathing and snoring. Alcohol is another common culprit.

Tip 2

Being overweight is another major cause. Extra weight in the neck and chest area puts more pressure on the airways. Yet another reason to exercise and lose weight.

Tip 3

Try sleeping on your side or stomach. Of course that’s easier said than done simply because it’s hard to control your sleeping position while you’re sleeping! However, there is an old trick that might be worth considering. You can tuck a chestnut, ping-pong ball, or similar sized object into the back of your shirt and wear it to bed. Every time you accidently lie on your back, it would alert you, and you can readjust yourself back to sleeping sideway. However, if you find this discomforting, then best advise to discontinue this technique.

Tip 4

Apply a nose patch on the bridge of your nose. I find them very useful, at least to start with. Nasal patches (often used by athletes) open up your airways by removing or preventing blockages. If you’re desperate, it’s worth a shot, but the cost of refilling them can add up over days, months, and years. Fortunately, these patches are affordable.
