Got an itch you can’t scratch, at least not in public? Maybe you’re feeling it wayyy down low, due to an itchy butt crack or butt cheeks, or have itchy bumps on your butt. Fortunately, pruritis ani — the medical name for anal itching — affects only 1 to 5 percent of the general population. Still, those low numbers aren’t too reassuring when you’re the one with an itchy butt.
Even less reassuring? The fact that scratching a butt itch likely only makes matters worse, and can quickly put you in an endless itch-scratch cycle, says Roberta L. Muldoon, M.D., an assistant professor of colon and rectal surgery at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. That’s because “when you scratch the anal area, you tend to break the skin and cause little superficial abrasions, which then begin to itch, so you scratch even more,” she says.
